This means I volunteer to encourage children and young adults to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. My volunteering is mainly in the form of:
Kingston University Code Dojo
I mentor kids in a Code Dojo which takes place one Saturday per month during term time.
In previous years I taught them to use Transport for London’s API with two workshops. The first let them create a bus countdown display (like the ones you see at bus stops showing how many minutes away the next few busses are) using Google’s blockly language, which is a Scratch-like grapical programming environment. The second lets them use Javascript to plot tube stations on a map of Londdon and show the arrival times of tube trains at those stations. Both of these were developed by the Schools Outreach team at TfL’s Technology and Data division.
If you want to give feedback on the course (please do – it really helps me) you can do so here
Inspire Engineering
Inspire Engneering is a program run by London Transport Museum for Key Stage 3 pupils to explore the museum’s collection at its Acton Depot and interview an Engineer (me!)
Careers talks
I give careers talks and support events at local scrools where I mainly talk about Engineering and Software Development Apprenticeships and encourage girls to consider engineering careers.
